Dr. McMillan Delivers Lectures on MRI Physics and AI at 2026 UW Radiology Summit
MITRP Principal Investigator, Dr. Alan McMillan, participated as invited faculty at the Second Annual University of Wisconsin Radiology Summit.
Held from January 19–22, 2026, in Park City, Utah, the summit served as a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together radiologists and physicists to discuss critical updates in diagnostic imaging. Dr. McMillan joined a distinguished roster of UW faculty to deliver two sessions, underscoring the vital link between fundamental physics and clinical application.
Reinforcing Fundamentals: MRI Physics
On Tuesday, Dr. McMillan presented “Proton Power Hour: From Spin to Slice.”
This session provided a comprehensive review of the underlying physics of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. By revisiting the core principles of nuclear magnetic resonance, Dr. McMillan helped attendees bridge the gap between theoretical physics and daily diagnostic interpretation. This foundational knowledge remains essential for radiologists to optimize image quality and troubleshoot artifacts in clinical practice.
Advancing Technology: Artificial Intelligence in Radiology
Addressing the future of the field, Dr. McMillan also led a session on Thursday titled “Pixels ➔ Predictions: An AI Starter Kit for Radiologists.”
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape medical imaging, bridging the technical-clinical divide is paramount. Dr. McMillan provided a practical framework for understanding how AI models process image data to generate predictive insights. The lecture offered a “starter kit” for clinicians, demystifying the “black box” of machine learning and outlining how these technologies are moving from research development to clinical deployment.
Fostering Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The summit, co-directed by Dr. Tabby Kennedy and Dr. Roberta Strigel, focused on professional development and continuing medical education (CME). We congratulate everyone on a successful summit and his continued efforts to advance the intersection of physics and clinical radiology.
